Tea leaves were first introduced to Norway in the early 1630s. The leaves were brought to Norway by merchant ships from the far east. The trade route into Oslo, or Christiania as it was called back then, was full of dangers. Ranging from local kingpins to pirate infested areas and, of course, the dreaded Oslofjord. With its treacherous coastline and the well-known Oslo mist, it was not for the faint-hearted.
Demand for natural leaf was high. It was considered a far healthier alternative compared to other locally produced brews. In this period, local governments, which were strongly affiliated with the church, considered the tea leaves a strong competitor to their own produce and banned importation, distribution and consumption of it.
Risking severe punishment, a group of local free thinkers, made up of farmers, boatbuilders, soldiers, and even doctors formed a consortium. Their belief was that people should be free to consume what they desire without involvement of the church or state. Under cover of the Oslofjord mist, Tea leaves where smuggled in glass-jars, directly from the merchant ships and distributed along the coast of the Oslo region. This brotherhood was later to go under the name of Oslo Tea Company.
